  • Total Time: 2 hours 10 minutes
  • Yield: 12 servings 1x

Ingredients

Scale
  • 9 regular lasagna noodles do not use no-boil noodles
  • 1 lbs. mozzarella grated
  • 8 oz. Parmesan cheese grated
  • 1 lbs. lean ground beef
  • 2 mild Italian sausages removed from its casing
  • 1 tbsp olive oil
  • 4 cloves garlic minced
  • 1 cup onion chopped
  • 28 oz can whole peeled San Marzano tomatoes
  • 8 oz can tomato sauce
  • 2 tsp Italian seasoning
  • Kosher salt and fresh ground pepper to taste
  • 4 tbsp butter
  • 1/4 cup AP flour
  • 2 1/2 cups milk
  • Kosher salt and freshly ground black pepper to taste
  • Grating of fresh nutmeg or a pinch of ground nutmeg

Instructions

  1. In a large skillet, brown the ground beef and sausage over medium heat, breaking the meat apart. Drain the grease and set the meat aside.
  2. Add olive oil to the same skillet; once hot, add chopped onions and cook for 2-3 minutes. Stir in garlic for 30 seconds, being careful not to burn.
  3. Add whole peeled tomatoes and their juices to the skillet, squishing them as you go. Stir in the tomato sauce, Italian seasoning, salt, and pepper. Simmer for 20-30 minutes.
  4. Cook the lasagna noodles according to package directions for half the time, then drain and drizzle with olive oil.
  5. For the white sauce, melt butter in a saucepan, add flour and cook for 1-2 minutes. Gradually stir in milk, season with salt and pepper, and simmer until thickened.
  6. Preheat the oven to 350°F.
  7. Lightly coat a 9×13-inch pan with cooking spray. Start layering with red sauce, followed by noodles, red sauce, white sauce, and cheese. Repeat until all ingredients are used, finishing with cheese on top.
  8. Bake for 40-50 minutes until hot and bubbling. Let sit for 15-20 minutes before slicing.
