Koulourakia are delightful Greek Easter cookies, known for their irresistible orange flavor and tender texture. This simple recipe combines fresh ingredients and traditional techniques, perfect for your next gathering or holiday celebration.

  • Total Time: 2 hours 20 minutes
  • Yield: 50 cookies 1x

Ingredients

Scale
  • 1 cup (200g) sugar
  • Zest of 1 orange
  • 1/2 cup unsalted butter, at room temperature (1 stick, 113g)
  • 1/3 cup extra virgin olive oil (87ml)
  • 1/2 cup freshly squeezed orange juice (100ml)
  • 1/2 teaspoon baking soda
  • 1/2 teaspoon baking powder
  • 2 large eggs
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
  • 3 3/4 cups all-purpose flour (450g)
  • 1 tablespoon whole milk
  • Sesame seeds (optional)

Instructions

  1. Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C).
  2. Combine the sugar and orange zest in a bowl, rubbing them together to release the zest's oils.
  3. In a stand mixer, cream the butter, sugar-zest mixture, and olive oil until fluffy, about 8-10 minutes.
  4. Stir the orange juice and baking soda together in a separate bowl until bubbly, then mix into the creamed mixture along with the baking powder, 1 egg, and vanilla extract.
  5. Gradually add the flour while mixing on low until you have a soft, pliable dough.
  6. On a clean surface, knead the dough into a ball then pinch off walnut-sized pieces to shape into ropes twisted into the traditional shape.
  7. Prepare baking sheets with parchment paper and place the cookies 2 inches apart.
  8. In a small bowl, mix the remaining egg with milk and brush this mixture over the cookies, then sprinkle with sesame seeds if desired.
  9. Bake the cookies for 15-20 minutes until lightly golden, then allow to cool on the sheet for 10 minutes before transferring to a wire rack.
