Ingredients
Scale
- 4 medium-to-large slices of bread (6 to 9 ounces)
- 2 tablespoons unsalted butter
- optional seasonings: ½ teaspoon garlic powder, ½ teaspoon dried oregano, pinch of red pepper flakes
- fine salt, to taste
Instructions
- Tear the bread into 2-inch pieces and place them into a food processor or blender.
- If desired, add garlic powder, oregano, and red pepper flakes to the bread. Process until the bread turns into very small crumbs, processing longer if needed.
- Prepare a large plate nearby for later use. Heat a large stainless steel or cast iron skillet over medium heat and melt the butter until the foam is nearly gone, swirling the pan for even distribution.
- Drop a few bread crumbs into the pan to check readiness—if they sizzle, the pan is ready.
- Add the processed bread crumbs to the skillet and increase the heat to medium-high. Cook for about 3 to 5 minutes while constantly stirring and breaking up clumps until the crumbs turn crisp and golden.
- Once cooked, transfer the bread crumbs to the plate and spread them out to cool. They will become crisper as they cool. Season with salt to taste before using, and store any leftovers in a sealed bag at room temperature for up to 3 months.
